Bianca: Yes, I confess. Me – the burger loving fiend only just made the trip to the Newtown hipsterville mecca ‘Marys’ in early Feb. Yes it was LOUD and incredibly busy but if you’re going there you’ve already resigned yourself to what you should be expecting so this should surprise no one. My friends and I arrived a little after 6pm on a Friday, so had no issues with seating, keep in mind we were downstairs where there is no table service. We were more than happy to order at the counter and people watch as folks came in. People watch is actually code for perving on the pierced Asian bartender. He’s hot, we all know it!! Marys is where I would imagine folks like Debbie Harry and Joey Ramone would hang if we were to go back some 40 or so years. Newtown locals Young Henrys have a few brewskies on tap – my go to beverage for the evening was the cider which I had and loved at Rupert & Ruby (now closed). …
You may have heard my constant ramblings about my love for ‘Bonarche Burgers’ in previous posts. They do, what I believe to be, some of the best burgers in Sydney. Better than ‘Chur Burgers’ and I’ve been to Chur three times to make that comparison, so I don’t say it lightly. Nestled in the former prime time location of Norton Street, Leichhardt (the Parramatta Road end) is Bonarche Burgers, a rather unassuming little eatery. With rather small signage it would be easy to wander past on an everyday basis and not be aware of the splendour within. Where Chur Burger has hit the nail on the head is its fit out, a loud vibrant space with white walls, young staff and timber furniture. Had Bonarche taken this road, more people would be heading to Leichhardt for a burger. The thing is, the charm of Bonarche is it’s quaintness. It’s what set’s it apart from every other place in Sydney doing 10 buck burgers. The team behind Bonarche Burger are ‘The Chef and The Butcher’ – …
Weeks ago my co-worker and friend Mark, mentioned a soon to open burger joint in Glebe, knowing my weakness for a good burger – I appreciated the heads up. Burger 10’s concept is a simple one ’10 Burgers, 10 Countries’, with 10 burgers representing different countries ranging from Greek, Turkish, Japanese, Lebanese, Australian and American. A very interesting concept for a humble product. Burger 10’s claim is a mighty big one – ‘Home of the best ten burgers in the world’. I Dragged Mark (Job Dun – His comic book alter ego) along one rainy Sunday afternoon, one week into trading. Because it was raining, it essentially wiped out half of Burger 10’s outdoor seating, incidentally most of the seats indoors were occupied. Having perused the menu before our visit we were well prepared, or so we thought. We decided to share two burgers – The American ‘Classic Beef Burger’ with a classic burger bun, grass fed beef pattie, tomato chutney, beetroot, pickled cucumber, rocket leaves and mayo. As well as the Greek ‘Lamb …
